18-wheeler Flips onto Car, Hits Barrier

DALLAS - An 18-wheeler flipped on its side late Thursday morning and crushed a car at one of the busiest

intersections in North Texas.

The truck also knocked the concrete center barrier into oncoming traffic.

The wreck happened about 10:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway just past I-635. All

northbound lanes of the tollway remained closed at 12:30 p.m.

Two of the southbound lanes were closed as well as police worked to clear the accident.

According to Dallas Fire-Rescue\\'s Jason Evans, the 18-wheeler driver was headed from wesbound I-635 to the

northbound tollway when he lost control on the curve, possibly because he was going too fast.

When he did, his rig flipped sideways, toppling over and crushing a silver 4-door Chevy Cruze. The 49-year-old

male driver of that rental car was trapped in his car.

Several bystanders stopped and wrenched open the doors to assist him. The 18-wheeler driver, who would give his

name only as "Henry," was not hurt.

The Chevy Cruze driver was rushed to Parkland Hospital with neck and back injuries, Evans said.

When the 18-wheeler fell over, it also struck the center concrete barrier dividing the north- and southbound lanes

-- driving the barrier into an oncoming southbound SUV.

The two people in that vehicle, a black Volkswagen Toureg, were not injured, witnesses said.

The 18-wheeler lost some fuel, and hazmat crews came to the scene to clean up the spill.

Several tollway lanes remained closed until the afternoon. The center concrete barrier must be repaired, and a

light pole was also damaged in the collision.
