rhee syngman is a genuine patriot acting in what he reards as the best interests of an independent korea. he tend, however, to regard the best interests of korea as synonymouse with his own.  

it is as if he, in his own mind at least, were korea.

rhee has dovoted his life to the cause of an independent korea with the ultimate objective of personally controlling that country
