Part One
"The Story"

Wednesday night church had just let out and Peter White knew he had to get home fast so he could help his mother clean the house. Normally he wouldn’t rush home to help his mother clean, but last week after the church service his mother had invited people over for dinner and hadn’t told him about it until he was walking out of the house to leave for youth group. He hated it when she did that. He wasn’t asking his mom to tell him everything she did every second of the day. He just wanted to know if he was going to have to spend the rest of the night cleaning, a few days in advance.
Instead of hopping in the car and gunning it home, Peter decided to chat with his friends from the youth group a bit before he left. It was your typical summer night in West Virginia. The air was a bit warm, but every once in a while a cool breeze would slide across your yard and brush up against your body, leaving the faint smell of freshly cut lawn or someone’s barbecue party.
Most of the adults had left directly after the church service, as usual, and the teens that had driven themselves there stayed after for about an hour and would fellowship with each other. Today was just your average Wednesday in West Virginia, but it would not stay that way for long, at least for Peter.
Peter saw some of his friends standing in a circle next to the sound machine in the back of the room where they held their youth group meeting every Sunday and Wednesday. They were all laughing at something. “Hey what are you guys laughing at?” Asked Peter.
“Man you have to check this out Peter.” Said John Yost. Peter walked up to the gathering of pals to see what was so interesting. There he saw Beau Trenton holding a magazine. “Have Aliens Tried to Warn Humans of End of the World?” screamed across the front page in big red letters.
“What are you reading that for?” Asked Peter.
“What else would we read it for, laughs.” Said John.
Peter poked Beau in the ribs interrupting his reading. “How much did that cost?” He inquired. Beau stopped reading and closed the magazine and looked at the price while he held his place with his finger.
“Seven dollars, why?”
“You could have just told a joke. It would have been a lot cheaper you know.” Beau began flipping through the pages pretending he didn’t hear Peter. He stopped at the back of the magazine and smiled.
“This was the main reason I bought it.” He said holding the article out for everyone to see. “Killer Moth in West Virginia” After a long pause, the boys started laughing hysterically. “What are you guys laughing at? It’s not that funny.”
“Yes it is.” Said Peter and John simultaneously.
“What does it say about this killer moth?” John asked.
“Well I read it before I got hear and it said that there is a killer moth at Point Pleasant. It said that a giant moth attacked a young married couple while they were parked up there alone at night. They heard squealing noises and scratching on top of the car. The husband tried to start the car, but it wouldn’t turn over. When they finally got it going they said they spotted a giant moth like creature flying after them, and when they got home they found scratch marks on the top of the car.” John and Peter looked at each other. They were both trying not to laugh.
“Beau, they probably made that story up for one, money, and two to get kids not to go up there at night.” Said John.
“No way my dad told me about that mothman. He said it is real.”
“Beau your dad just told you that to scare you. The thought of a half man, half moth is ludicrous.”
“Your dad tell you that story too?” asked a voice from behind them. They turned around to find Mike Roberts. “Come on guys its getting late lets go.” Mike left the room, and they all followed. It was their last year as High School students. They wanted to spend as much time as they could with each other, even if it meant walking out to the parking lot as a group.
“Where did you hear about Mothman?” Beau asked. Without turning around Mike answered.
“Like I said, My dad told me that story too, or at least a version of it.” They all reached the parking lot and stood there gazing out into the night. The sky was clear; it seemed as though you could see every star in the heavens from that church lot. Mike was sort of a leader he was tough and he always had an answer, but he didn’t have an answer for what would happen to them all after school let out.
“So what do you think you’ll be doing after school lets out?” Aked Peter as he quickened his pace to walk along side Mike.
“I guess I’ll be going up to that automachanic school. You know the one down the street from that bar where that guy got beat up in last summer?”
“Yea I know the one.”
“I’ve always loved cars my whole life and now I have a chance to get paid to do something I have always dreamed of.”
“You know I don’t think many people in the world get to do something like that. They may try, but usually it never happens.”
“I hear yea. Time sure does fly.” The second Peter heard the word, time, he remembered his mother.
“Oh crap I forgot! I have to get home to help my mom clean up the house!” The other boys started laughing. “We are having company over that’s why.” Peter ran to his car frantically trying to get the keys out of his pocket. John grabbed the magazine off of Beau and rolled it up like a megaphone.
“Look out while driving home tonight Peter, the Mothman is watching you!” He said in his best Vincent Price voice. Peter was too worried to hear what he said. He was too busy unlocking his car door and getting in. Peter started the car and pulled up to where the others were walking.
“See you guys later I’m late.”
“See you Peter.” Said Mike. Beau and John waved goodbye and walked their separate ways to their cars. Peter hit the gas again.

Part Two
"The Drive Home"

“I can’t believe I forgot about cleaning!” Peter said aloud in the car. He was speeding through town not watching for police as he did. Peter reached the road that led to his house in pretty good time. The only problem was it was a very long stretch of black top without any lights beside it to make traveling at night any easier. He would still be late; it just depended on the speed he chose to go that would determine how late he would be.
Peter turned on the radio to keep himself occupied. He always left the dial on his favorite radio station. When he was younger he used to surf the airwaves for any sing of a classic rock song, but then he discovered a new station that played only classic rock, now his days of surfing were over. It was a song by “Journey”, a very good song. Peter sang along while following the lines on the road with his eyes.
Everything seemed to be right in the world with Peter. He knew what he was going to do with his life after high school and where he was going to attend college. He had already been accepted at the University of Akron. It was far a way from home, but a small price to pay to get the degree he wanted. As he drove down the road the song on the radio began to get some interference. Peter thought that it was just the mountains getting in the way again, but instead of correcting itself in a matter of seconds, it continued to pick up static.
Peter tried moving up and down the dial a few times to see if that would fix it, but it only seemed to be the same, or worse on all of the other stations. Just when Peter thought that losing the radio was the worst possible thing that could happened the car suddenly stopped.
He checked the gas gauge and he had half a tank left to go before he would be empty. The battery light wasn’t on either. Peter decided not to break and to coast as far as he could. When the car finally stopped he got out to see what the problem could be. He checked every thing, from the spark plugs to the fan belt. He wiggled everything to see if it was loose and checked the oil to see if his problem was something simple.
Nothing was wrong. He got back in the car and tried to start it again, the car didn’t turn. He sat there in the dark with his car door open hoping that either the car would begin working, or that someone would come along to help him. He looked both ways down the deserted street. It didn’t seem that anyone was coming. Just then Peter heard something. At first he thought it was the sound of car tired rolling across the road, he thought he was saved, but as it got closer he could tell that it wasn’t an automobile.
Peter couldn’t see anything, but it sounded as if there were a pair of large wings flapping through the darkness. He felt that it would be a good idea if he got in the car, and did so. He locked all of the doors and rolled down the window just a little bit, so he could hear what was going on outside of the car. The flapping got louder and Peter got more nervous. He rolled up his window and peered through the front windshield to see if he could spot where the sound was coming from. The only thing he could see were the nighttime stars twinkling in the summer sky, but the loud, deep sound of wings cutting through air told him otherwise.

Peter now knew the sound was coming from right over the car. Even with his fright as strong as it was his curiosity was stronger. He had to see what was making the strange noise. He climbed over the front seat and peeked out the back window. What he saw confused and frightened him. What appeared to be two long, thing sticks were stomping on the trunk of his car. He followed the sticks up to an object that looked like a giant potato.
Peter climbed back to the front of the car and gazed out the front window. He saw nothing. To look back as far as he could from the front windshield he leaned the back of his head on the dashboard and squinted through the tinted glass that ended where the beginning of the hood began. He saw a few points of movement but nothing much. He sat back down in his chair and pulled a lever that made his seat fall back.
“I guess they are just branches.” He said. “Mothman my eye!” The flapping stopped. The area went totally quiet. No bugs chirping, or tree branches clawing at the top of his car. Just total silence. “Maybe now I can get some work done.” Said Peter. He sat up to unlock and open his car door when suddenly the glass from his side window exploded inward. Glass rushed in on his body like a twinkling wave that strikes the rocks on the seas shore.
Peter screamed, his arm flew up in order to protect his face. He backed away from the driver’s side and cowered under the glove compartment of the passenger’s side. He could hear no flapping and his mind shot from images of the Mothman to scenes of a bear attack from an old “When Animals Attack” show. The window above his head shattered and glass showered his compressed body. Peter shut his eyes brought in a deep breath and screamed.
Just when Peter thought it couldn’t get any worse a human like arm reached through the window and began grasping for him. The arm was thin yet muscular. Peter knew that it was his only chance to escape. He darted from his spot on the floor of the car to the driver’s side and opened the door. The creature was still searching for whoever was in the car when Peter burst from the driver’s side door, but the creature was not a dumb animal that was wanting a snack.
The second it heard the slapping of Peter’s sneaker’s on the road it knew its victim had gotten away. The car squealed as the large beast lunged from it’s perch to the source of the footsteps. Peter’s heart was racing three more beats faster than the rhythm of his feet when they hit the ground. He now had an idea of what the thing was. He didn’t know if it was really a mothman, but he knew it was some sort of monster. A thing that scared so many people, so long ago.
Peter focused his attention on a large tree that was beside the road up ahead of him. There was some part of him that wanted to turn around and see the flying demon behind him, to see it’s true face, but there was another part of him that said it wanted to have no part in seeing what it really was. He could tell from the flapping sound behind him that it was getting closer. Peter did the only thing he could think to do. “Help somebody! Someone please help me!”
The sound behind him as he reached the tree told him that he would not be able to out run the moth if he ran in a straight line, so he counted to three and jumped off to the side of the road on the left. His body hit the soft cold ground and he did a tuck and roll. There in the moon light as the creature’s silhouette glided across the moon he saw what the thing really was. It was in fact a mothman. The wings were that of your average house moth, fluttering up and down trying to keep itself in the sky. The upper half of the mothman however was the torso of a man from the waist up. At the bottom was a large abdomen of a moth.
The Mothman swooped down and around so it could have another chance at catching it’s prey. Peter followed it with his eyes and that’s when he saw it. Peter’s first thought was that it was a small, rundown mall, but then he saw the power grids. As the Mothman came back for a second chance at Peter, Peter dove to the ground and held his breath as the large flying alien glided inches above his head.
Peter then got up and for a second considered getting back into his car only to remember that it was rendered motionless by the eerie power of the Mothman. Instead he sprinted across the street and towards the power plant with the Mothman heading in the opposite direction. The facility itself was not as far away as Peter first thought.
As he neared the front gate it was apparent that it was an old power plant that had been abandoned for years. Peter knew the gate wouldn’t open, so he climbed it. He was on his way down the center road when he heard the scream coming from behind. No human could have mad that sound and Peter knew it. It sounded far away like the Mothman had tried looking in the car again, but he knew that at the speed the Mothman could travel that it could be above him in a heartbeat.
Peter ran to the closest building and checked the door. It was locked. The next building however was not. Inside Peter inhaled the stale air rather quickly as he searched the corridor wall for a light switch. It was more habit than instinct he knew the light might not come on, but his hand refused to stay idle. As he suspected the lights did not turn on. Peter ran his hand along the wall as he walked through the building. For the most part all he could feel was tile until he ran into a glass case with metal trim that was regressed back into the wall.
He knew what it was, many times as he would walk through the High school he would run his hands along the wall while he was walking to the bathroom or water fountain. It was a metal container with a glass front that held a fire extinguisher. Peter figured that it was better than nothing, and kicked out the glass. The extinguisher fell and bounced a few times along the cold tile floor. The clang sound of the fire extinguisher hitting the ground rang out through the halls.
Peter felt around for the pin in the dark and pulled it. Holding onto the handle of the extinguisher he ran down the hall farther into the darkness. Peter continued to walk along the side of the wall, this time instead of looking for a light switch he was looking for a telephone. The chance of finding a working phone was slim, but it was better than sitting still. Also the momentum of his moving feet helped him think, and what he needed right now was a plan.
As he jogged briskly down the black hall Peter looked behind him and found that the Mothman was no where in sight. With his head turned around he failed to see the wall that he was heading for and slammed into it. The force of the blow made him fall backwards and drop the extinguisher. It slid a few feet away from his hands. Peter rolled over on his stomach and began feeling around for the tool.
A window close by shattered and three spikes of moonlight stabbed into the hallway’s darkness. Peter received an adrenaline rush so powerful that he could taste it in his mouth. He scrambled for his lost weapon that had rolled several feet away by now. Peter’s fingers were practically touching the bottom of the extinguisher when the Mothman clutched his foot and swung him off to the left away from the extinguisher. To his surprise Peter found that the Mothman was very strong and could probably finish him off any time it wanted to.
Peter slammed into the wall. He looked back at the Mothman and knew that if he wanted to survive he would have to take drastic measures.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part Three
"The Fight"

As the Mothman reached out again for Peter he tried to regain his footing, but failed. The monster tossed him this time to the right, but instead of hitting as wall Peter slid directly on top of the extinguisher. Having already pulled the pin Peter rolled over on his back and squeezed the handle. A freezing cold mist rushed from the mouth of the extinguisher and surrounded the Mothman’s face.
An awkward screeched filled the air and in a matter of seconds a three-fingered hand was all that was visible of the beast. Once the extinguisher was out Peter got up and ran for a door at the end of the hall. Outside the air was crisp and refreshing compared to the air that had been trapped in the cement coffin that was the power plant, he scanned the parking lot for a means of escape. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a sparkle that shot out of the night like a laser beam.
As he approached rather quickly he found that the glimmer was that of a fireman’s ax blade. Peter wasted no time in retrieving it from the side of the truck. He spun around to face his opponent and not a moment too soon. The Mothman flew from the double doors and out into the night. Peter figured it had really good eyesight because it changed directions flew towards him while Peter’s eyes were still adjusting a bit.
As the Mothman got closer Peter could see that it’s face hadn’t thawed out yet from the extinguisher. Peter waited until the Mothman was right up on him before he started swinging the ax. He didn’t want the creature to see what he was doing and veer off before he had a chance to strike it. This tactic proved to be very effective. Although he didn’t hit the Mothman in the face were he was aiming he did manage to rip the very bottom of it’s left wing. Peter watched as the monster rose high above his head flying straight up, only to suddenly change direction in an instant like a UFO. Peter screamed. “I hope somebody finds me. Help anybody!”
Peter’s mother, Adrian, had just put a load of dishes in the dishwasher and was about to start cleaning off the table when suddenly she felt a great sense of fear for her son. She went to the window and looked out at the street. It was bathed in blue light from the moon. Her son’s car was not on it. The terrible feeling that something was wrong struck her again. She walked over to the phone and called the church. She received no answer. The next call she made was to the police.
“Hello West Bridge police department how may I help you?”
“I think something has happened to my son. He went to church tonight and he isn’t back yet. I have a strange feeling something wrong has happened.”
“Could you tell me what your son’s name is?”
“It’s Peter White.”
“How long has Peter been missing?”
“Well church usually lasts an hour or so, but he should have been here two hours ago.”
“So you’re saying that your son has been missing for two hour?”
“Yes.”
“Ma’am I realize that this may be hard for you, but we don’t consider a child missing until they have been gone for twenty-four hours.”
Adrian walked over to a window that was closer to the phone and looked out on her back yard that gave a view of the other side of the road, still no car.
“Well isn’t there anything you can do. I have a strong feeling that he is in trouble. Couldn’t you send out a car for me just to check at the church.”
“Sorry ma’am, but we just can’t waist man power to…” This made Adrian mad. She had been as calm as she could even with the feeling that she had, and for this woman to tell her that it would be a waist to search for her son clinched it.
“Waist man power? Waist man power? My son is out there probably hurt very badly and you are sitting here telling me that it is a waist of manpower! Let me tell you something there aren’t enough cops on this earth that would be a sufficient amount of man power to look for my son, so I suggest you send out one lousy cop car before I…
“OK ma’am sorry listen I’ll see what I can do, but I am not promising anything. It hasn’t been twenty-four hours, so he is not officially a missing person. I promise you I will try my best.” Adrian’s heartbeat was still pretty fast, but the assurance that something was done made her feel at least thankful.
“Thank you. That means a lot to me.”
“I just have to ask you a few questions about your son, like where the church is located and what type and color his car is. Those sorts of things.”
“Of coarse.” Adrian said more calmly.
Officer Mike Yurko Jr. was out on the streets patrolling the neighborhood when he got the call over the CB.
“Calling unit 18, calling unit 18, do you copy? Over.”
“Unit 18 here. Over.”
“Be on the lookout for a young boy around sixteen to seventeen years old. He has been reported missing by his mother. He drove to the church on Vine Street and was suppose to be home two hours ago. He was driving a blue Oldsmobile from the church. He has blond hair and blue eyes and is about five-seven. If you see him tell him his mother wants him home. Over.”
“I understand. Unit eighteen over and out.” Mike placed the CB back. At the power plant Peter had managed to get inside another building without being killed by the Mothman. The building appeared to be a storage room for tools and medical supplies. Peter moved quietly praying that he wouldn’t give his position away to the killer that stalked him outside. He searched the lockers inside looking for something that could improve his situation.
“Hey what’s this?” He asked himself. As he turned it over in his hands it suddenly hit him. He placed it on the counter that was nest to him and looked through the locker for the ammo. He found them in the next locker over; they were in a box of ten. He opened the box and looked back at the flare gun. Peter didn’t know if it was his situation that heightened his sense of understanding or if it was a relatively easy gun to load. Whatever it was he figured out how to load the single shot flare gun in an astonishing amount of time, at least it was to Peter.
Once he had loaded the gun he took it and the ax with him and went to the nearest window he could find. The window was shut and locked. Peter felt the top of the window and found a piece of metal that when turned unlocked the window. He tried as hard as he could, but it was too old and wouldn’t budge. He took the ax ant hit the lock with the backside of the ax and yet is still wouldn’t move. Not wanting to alert the Mothman of his whereabouts he went to another window. This time the window Peter tried opened. He picked up the flare gun and aimed it for high above the city lights. Once Peter pulled the trigger the flare shot like a fiery demon from the mouth of a cave hissing and bobbing along the star blanketed sky, but instead of bursting and alerting people of his whereabouts, it reached it’s highest point and dropped fell to the ground.
The sound and quick movement of the flare did however alert the Mothman of Peter’s position. As Peter loaded another flare into the gun the Mothman flew above the building to see where the flare came from. Peter fired the flare gun for the second time and watched as it successfully erupted in the sky.
About this time Officer Yurco was pulling out of a Mc Donalds with a large coffee. As he placed the Styrofoam cup in the holder he noticed a burst of light coming from the old power plant. On any other night he would have let it be, but after getting the call about the lost boy, he decided to check it out.
While Officer Yurco made his way to the power plant, Peter stood by the window and watched the city lights and hoping that someone saw his signal. He began loading the gun again for a third time when he heard something moving outside of the window. Peter quickly cocked the gun and held it close to his chest. A cold wind blew through the open window and at that moment it looked like the most peaceful place on earth. Peter gazed at it and stepped forward. Silence overtook the building like the ocean waters overtake a cabin of a sinking submarine.
Peter took another step forward and waited again. He didn’t know if he should venture any farther or stay at bay. Before he even realized what was going on the Mothman had already entered the room and flew behind him. Peter turned around to find it there behind him. Its eyes were a bright red color; they seemed to glow as two embers from a fire.
Peter was too stunned to frightened to move. He stood there watching the monster. It’s long thing legs held tightly to the ground and the two hands were balled up into fists of rage. Peter knew that if he didn’t snap out of his state then he would be killed. The Mothman raised up and made a high pitched sound that Peter could only cringe to. “I hope someone saw that flare.” He said as he dove behind a table in the small shed.
With great fluid like strides the Mothman seemed to glide across the room to where Peter was now ducking. He aimed the flare gun at the end of the table where he hoped the Mothman would soon emerge from. He heard the steps of the creature getting closer and closer. Peter lay on his stomach and patiently waited. The only thing that was stopping his screams from all of the suspense was his will to live.
The footsteps stopped and Peter held his breath. His finger was wrapped around the trigger twitching for the moment to lunge backward and destroy the Mothman. “What are you doing?” Whispered Peter to the Mothman. In the blink of an eye the table that once protected Peter was now an airborne missile headed for the wall. The table slammed into the wall and broke. Peter looked at it to see if the Mothman was attached, it was not.
It only took a moment for Peter to put two and two together. He rolled over on his back away from where the Mothman was stationed and looked up. There off to his left stood the Mothman grimacing down on him. It had thrown the table before it to reveal the hiding young man underneath.
Outside of the plants perimeter stood Officer Yurco. He was checking the license plate number to the blue Oldsmobile that was stalled in the middle of the street. He then began checking both sides of the road for any trace of the young boy who was reported missing, nothing. Yurko went back to his car contacted the police station on what he had found. “Yea I think it is his. Earlier tonight I saw a flare go off from over here, but you think if he set it off he would have stayed to see if someone was on there way to pick him up.”
“Maybe something scared him away. Or someone did pick him up.” Said the woman from the other side.
“Don’t even think something like that. That would mean that we also have a kidnapper to look out for too along with all of the other creeps this town has endured.”
“It is a possibility though. Did you check the power plant down there?”
“Well I don’t think that he would go into a dark run down building do you?” Officer Yurko looked out into the night in the direction of the power plant.
“Kids do crazy things when there frightened.”
“I don’t know. I…” suddenly a bright light illuminated the complete inside of a building throwing out spears of light from the windows. “I’ll get back to you! A light just flashed from inside on of the buildings at the plant. Over.” Officer Yurco hung up the CB and got in the car. He drove up to the gate of the power plant and found that it was still shut. He knew that it was run down and didn’t have any power, so he drove through it. The gate blew inward and the cop car raced down the main center road of the power plant.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part Four
"The Conclusion"

Peter was on his back with his eyes shut. The Mothman was thrashing about the building. Peter had fired the flare right into the face of the Mothman and it had gone off. Peter stood up and ran for the door leaving the Mothman screeching in the shed. As he ran he began to load one of his flares into his gun, but in the heat of the moment he dropped it. He turned back so he could retrieve it, but just as he was about to grab it the door to the shed exploded sending spinters and large jagged spears of wood hurdling out towards the stars and Peter, the Mothman followed.
Peter straightened up and began running again. “I can’t believe this! Why did this have to happen to me?” As he was running he took out his last flare and loaded it successfully into the gun. Meanwhile as the cop car grew closer to the Mothman the power began to fail.
“What in the world?” Said Officer Yurco. He tried the CB, but it didn’t work, neither did the siren or lights. By the time he had tried everything in the cop car it had coasted to a stop. Right before the lights went out he caught a glimpse of Peter running down the road with something in his arms. Officer Yurco stepped out of the vehicle.
“Hey you stop!” Said Yurco. Peter didn’t listen. Officer Yurco figured that the boy didn’t stop because he might be in danger. Yurco opened his door and used it as a shield as he removed his police issued handgun from its holster. He then yelled again for Peter to stop. Peter didn’t see the policeman until he was only ten feet away.
“Hey help! It’s after me!”
“What’s after you?” Asked Yurco. Peter didn’t stop running as he neared the squad car.
“The Mothman! It’s right behind me!” Officer Yurco saw that Peter wasn’t about to cease his quick pace, so he lunged out from behind his car door and grabbed him. Peter continued to move his feet, but Officer Yurco’s upper body strength over powered him.
“Hold on son, nothing is behind you. Look.” Peter tried one last time to break free from the policeman’s grip, but he was unsuccessful.
“Quick we have to get out of here now! It will kill us both!”
“What will?” Peter stopped moving and looked up at the cop.
“The Mothman!” Officer Yurco leaned back and gave him a quizzical look.
“That myth that everyone talks about?”
“It’s not a myth it is real and it was about to kill me in there, but I shot it in the face with a flare gun.” Officer Yurco glanced down at the gun Peter was holding.
“Maybe you should give that to me. I think it is gone now.”
“Not a chance. It stunned it once I’m not letting this thing go.”
“Come on kid, that thing could go off and kill you or me.”
“Better than getting killed by a giant moth.”
“Look I have a police issue gun. What ever it is that is chasing you cannot stand up against this.” Officer Yurco pulled out his gun and showed it to Peter hoping that he would drop the flare gun. Peter reluctantly handed the loaded flare gun over to Officer Yurco.
“Now let’s get out of here. I can come back tomorrow and check out the area. Come on I’ll take you back to your car and find out what is wrong with it. I bet we can get it working in no time.” Peter nodded and got in the squad car with Officer Yurco.
The police car backed up turned around and headed out through the main entrance. It wasn’t long before they reached Peter’s about a block down the road. Peter didn’t want to get out, and Officer Yurco could tell.
“I think it left. If it were still here it probably would have attacked the car.” Peter just looked at him. Officer Yurco got out first. He strolled over to the Oldsmobile and opened the hood after circling the vehicle. Peter watched from the safety of the police car as the officer disappeared behind the navy blue wave that was the hood of his car. After a few minutes Officer Yurco stepped out from in front of the car and motioned for Peter to join him.
“I can’t find anything wrong with it.” Officer Yurco looked through one of the shattered windows. “Man what did this?” Peter sat all by himself in the running police car. “Do you have the keys?” Asked Officer Yurco, Peter nodded. “Well come out here and try it out.” Peter reached in his pocket and pulled out the car keys. He stared at them for a while then he looked out the window. The Mothman was no where to be found. He slowly opened up the police car and glanced gazed at the stars above him.
On his list of top ten things he would rather not do this would be a number two. Number one would be facing the Mothman again. He slowly stepped out of the car and jogged to the Oldsmobile. Officer Yurco was using his flashlight to knock away most of the shards of glass that were on the seat. Peter reached in with his right arm place the key into the ignition and started the car.
“See nothing was wrong.” Said Officer Yurco. Just then the car stalled again. “Try once more.” As Peter turned the key the lights from the police car went out.
“He’s back.” Said Peter. The faint sound of wings fluttering in the distance could be heard. Peter scooted further back into the car.
“Stay there.” Said Officer Yurco as he slipped his gun from its holster. He kept a sharp eye on the shadows trying to guess where the beast might come from. Suddenly the sound of wings cutting through the air got louder. A loud screech followed and the face of the Mothman manifested before Yurco. Before he could fire the winged creature swooped down and sliced into his face with one of its claws.
Officer Yurco fell back onto the hard pavement. As the Mothman circled around Peter knew what had to be done. He ran from his semi-safe enclosure of the Oldsmobile to the squad car and retrieved the flare gun after feeling around in the darkness. “Don’t worry officer I found the flare gun.” Peter ran out in front of the Mothman and stood there aiming the gun not moving as a sniper.
“No get back in the car Pete!” The Mothman came in for another strike, but the squeezing of Peter’s finger was too fast for the large bug. The flare jumped out of the end of the barrel and struck the Mothman on the right arm erupting in a sphere of light.
“Fire now!” Shouted Peter as he jumped and rolled off to the left. Officer Yurco raised his gun and fired all six shots at the legendary aberration. The momentarily blind Mothman caught every one of the bullets in the upper body. As the final bullet penetrated the hard flesh of the monstrosity it simply glided upside down and fell to the street.
While the laceration on Officer Yurco’s face poured forth a glistening crimson, he sat up and lowered his gun. The pain went away with the rush of adrenaline. He was about to stand up when a hand was placed in front of him. He looked up and saw the face of the boy he was sent out to save. Suddenly the tables had turned and he was the one being rescued from the evils of the night.
“Thanks. I don’t think I will ever be able to repay you.” Said Yurco. Peter smiled.
“You got it wrong officer. I was the one repaying you.” Lights from the patrol car illuminated the two warriors.
“Maybe now we can see what that thing really is.” Said Officer Yurco as he got to his feat. The two walked over to where the Mothman had fallen. They both stood there shocked. There in the middle of the street sat a single spent bullet that had bounced off of the Mothman and landed in the road, nothing else remained.
“What where did it go?” Peter asked. Officer Yurco took him by the arm and led him to his car.
“I say if we leave now we will have a pretty good chance of surviving.” Peter nodded. That night two people’s lives were changed forever. One was a popular outgoing person that had all the friends in the world. Now he has shut himself off from the world and writes of the terrors that loom over him at night. The other was a rookie patrol officer that had no direction in his life but to serve and protect. Now he is the police Chief of his Police Department. His fears include losing his job, messing up his marriage and receiving another call to go to Point Pleasant.
