천재 뮤지션 brian wilson이 만든 너무나 아름다운 노래.

개인적으로 힘든 일이 있을 때마다 듣곤 하는.. 아끼는 노래다.

원래는 the ronettes의 히트곡 'be my baby'의 후속곡으로 주기 위해 만든 노래인데,

프로듀서인 phil spector가 그루브감이 떨어진다며 퇴짜를 놓자 brian wilson이 기분 나빠서

그냥 비치 보이즈의 싱글로 발표해버린 작품이다. 그래서인지 곡 앞머리에 들리는

hal blaine의 드럼 연주는 'be my baby'에서의 연주와 똑같다.

이 노래는 the who의 드러머 故 keith moon이 1970년대 중반에 리메이크하여 발표하기도 했으며,

b.j. thomas가 1977년에 리메이크한 것이 빌보드 17위에 올랐고, 

1980년대 후반엔 everly brothers가 부르기도 했다.

이 노래의 매력을 꼽자면 브라이언 윌슨의 부드러운 팔세토 창법과 아름답게 편곡된 코러스가 일품이고,

이중적인 내용을 포함하고 있는 가사도 멋지다.

가사를 살펴보면 주인공 남자는 오늘 있을 자동차 경주가 이만저만 걱정이 아니다.

(1950~60년대 미국 젊은이들 사이에서 유행하던 자동차 경주:  영화 [이유없는 반항]을 떠올려 보길...)

하지만 그가 정말로 걱정하고 있는 것은 사랑하는 그녀의 마음을 잃지 않을까 하는 것이다.

그런 그의 귀에 산들바람처럼 나즈막히 속삭이는 코러스 - 그녀의 목소리가 들려온다.

"don't worry, baby~"

"everything will turn out alright"

beach boys를 그저 그런 서프송 밴드로만 생각하는 사람들이 많은데,

그들의 음악에는 1960년대 올드팝의 진수가 담겨 있다.
