1980년 영화 [9 to 5]의 주제곡.

600곡이 넘는 돌리 파튼의 자작곡들 가운데 최고의 히트를 기록했던 '9 to 5'는

1981년 빌보드 컨트리 싱글 차트 1위, 팝 싱글 차트 1위, 어덜트 컨템포러리 차트에서 모두 1위를 기록했다.

영화도 크게 흥행하여 돌리 파튼은 배우로서의 입지도 굳건히 다질 수 있었으나

이후 세 편 정도의 흥행작에 출연한 뒤로는 뚜렷이 내세울만한 작품이 없다.

같은 해에 나온 sheena easton의 노래 'morning train (9 to 5)'는

원래 제목이 이 노래와 같은 '9 to 5'였으나 혼란을 피하기 위해 'morning train'으로 제목을 바꾸었고,

시나 이스턴의 싱글 역시 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위에 오르는 대히트를 기록했다.

현재 컨트리계에서 후배가수들로부터 가장 존경받는 가수 중 한 명인 dolly parton과

데뷔당시 '제2의 janis joplin', '여자 bruce springsteen' 이라는 평가를 받았던

허스키 여가수 melissa etheridge의 합동공연.

컨트리 음악 전문 케이블 채널 cmt 의 간판 프로그램 중 하나인 crossroads에 출연한 영상이다.

어울릴 듯 어울리지 않는 두 사람의 스타일이 묘하게 조화를 이루고 있어 즐겁다.

그다지 깊은 고민 없이 만든 것 같은 영화에 비해서 ost 앨범 [9 to 5 and odd jobs]는 들을만 하다.

ost 수록곡 중에 'deportee'라는 노래를 강력 추천하니, 시간이 된다면 꼭 한 번 들어보길 권한다.

"모던 포크의 아버지" woody guthrie의 1948년 프로테스트 詩 작품. 

1948년 미국 캘리포니아 주 los gatos 계곡 상공에서 비행기 한 대가 추락했다.

그 비행기에는 멕시칸 노동자들 29명과 승무원 3명 (조종사 내외, 그리고 부조종사) 등 총 32명이 탑승했는데

사고로 인해 전원 사망했다. 당시의 신문들과 라디오 방송에서는 승무원들 3명의 이름만 명시될 뿐,

멕시칸 노동자들에 대해서는 아무런 신원 확인 작업이 이루어지지 않은 채 "deportees"라고만 보도됐다.

그리고 사고가 발생한 바로 첫 날에 29구의 시신들은 몽땅 한 묘자리에 집단 매장됐다.

일반인들의 출입을 통제한 채 진행된 매장...

그리고 그 매장에 쓰인 묘자리의 크기는 (84 x 7) feet 였다고 한다.

woody guthrie는 언론의 보도 행태와 당국의 안일한 사고 처리에 충격을 받고 'deportee'라는 시를 썼다.

그리고 자신의 노래 속에서나마 고인들에게 이름을 붙여주었다.

"goodbye to my juan, goodbye rosalita; adiós, mis amigos, jesús y maría..."

그로부터 10년 후 교사인 martin hoffman이 woody의 시에 곡을 붙였고 포크 음악의 거장 pete seeger가

정식으로 취입했다. 그밖의 유명한 버전들로는 the kingston trio (1963), judy collins (1964),

the byrds (1969), joan baez (1971), arlo guthrie (1974), dolly parton (1980), the highway men (1985),

peter, paul and mary (1995), nanci griffith (1998), bruce springsteen (2000) 등이 있다.
